PARTNERSHIPS College of Electrical and Computer Engineering     2019/12/30
Research project principal investigator:  Professor Kai-Ten Feng

Kai-Ten Feng, as an Associate Dean of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) initiates the three-year project of International Research Cooperation with Evaluating International Academic Prestige, which the topic is “Next Generation Intelligent Dynamic Positioning and Tracking Systems and Millimeter Wave Wireless Radio Access Technologies.”
In order to meet requirement of wireless mobile services for information and communication technologies (ICT), next generation mobile wireless system is regarded as a revolutionary technology in both industries and academia. What is coming in the future are pervasive and full services integrated with hybrid techniques and networking. However, next generation with explosive Big Data is becoming compelling imperative so that we should resort to intelligent learning techniques to resolve problems of human morphologies and abundant rapidly-changing wireless environments.
By employing machine and deep learning, we can break through new challenges by intelligently optimizing positioning and tracking that cannot not be appropriately dealt with by traditional legacy methodologies. With the renovated technologies of artificial intelligence, the next generation positioning and tracking systems can conduct analysis and processing of complex human behaviors, which potentially offers diverse demands and improve development.

The NCTU team have been researching with international Top Notch to collaboratively exploit future research potentials. The research achievements include the followings:
1. Project spreading is honored and supported by Year-2019 MoST International Cooperation Support for 5G/B5G Wireless Communication Network Technologies R&D Project. The R&D project is entitled as “Next Generation CoMP for 5G NR Networks with Center and Edge Intelligence.” International cooperation partner is University of Southampton (Soton), England.

2. 2019 international exchange and cooperation with top institutions:
(1) Professor Kai-Ten Feng has visited University of California, Davis (UCD) during August, 2019. He has finished NCTU-UCD international Memorandum of understanding (MoU) and cooperation proposal which research target is about next generation 5G wireless communication networks.
(2) Prof. Rob Maunder from Soton has provided a profound speech in Aug. 2019, talking about novel architecture of error-coding scheme and new 5G mobile wireless network technologies.
(3) Prof. Zhi Ding from UCD is invited to have a speech in Aug. 2019 dicussing about advanced massive MIMO antenna measurement and deep learning employment on 5G new radios.

3. International exchanges of outstanding PhD researchers with Soton Next Generation Wireless (NGW) group. Two PhD students has cooperated with top famous scholars Prof. Lajos Hanzo and Prof. Lie-Liang Yang to conduct short-term research and publish high-quality international IEEE journal and transaction papers in Soton and UCD:
(1) Prof. Jwo-Yuh Wu has cooperated with Prof. Robert G Maunder and Prof. Lajos Hanzo to publish high-quality research papers (Impact Factor: 20.23) accepted and published by IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials.
(2) Profs. Kai-Ten Feng, Sau-Hsuan Wu and Jwo-Yuh Wu (NCTU) periodically discuss with Prof. Robert G Maunder (Soton) via con-calls. One expect to publish research journal papers to IEEE journals with high impact factors.
(3) International cooperative papers: 3 journals are published, 4 journals are under revision, 3 conference papers and 7 other preparing journals.

4. NCTU team has attended DARPA SubT Challenge competition during Aug. 2019, which is the top worldwide engineering competition. DARPA is US Advanced Research Program for military development and advanced technologies. The NCTU team possessing competitive technical skills on robots has achieved the world seventh place and the second place in the self-funded team.

NCTU-ECE team has effectively and efficiently escalated industrial and academic influence by cooperatively publishing worldwide important conferences and journals. Though the international elite cultivation project in key research fields, members in NCTU have visited top universities and conduct significant cooperative researches. Both sides are willing to realize sustainable cooperation and exchange. This project has advanced policy support and strategic planning in both academia and industries with US, UK, Australia and India. We are capable of accelerating advanced and novel system integration in terms of healthcare, remote monitoring, assistive machine, 5G/6G networks, positioning systems and human-machine interfaces. The project has strengthened future elite cultivation and recruited foreign talented fellows, which NCTU team is hard working on being an international outstanding model.
