Forward-looking International Cooperation Research Project of Semiconductor Components and Chip Design

PARTNERSHIPS College of Electrical and Computer Engineering     2019/12/30
Research project principal investigator:  Professor Hung-Ming Chen

1. Visited the Department of Electronics, its laboratory and Nano Center on March 12, 2019. A bilateral seminar was held on March 13. Professors of the Department of Electronics were Prof. Wu Chungyu, Professor Lee Chenyi, Professor Lai Bocheng, Professor Chang Hsie-Chia, and Professor Hang Xueming, Professor Fang Weiqi, and Professor Jerry Jou.
On March 14th, we communicated with Professor Jerry Jou''s team and Professor Fang Weiqi''s team on AI chips, AIoT design, and biomedical electronic components and system design and discussed international cooperation.

2. Based on the design of the front-end circuit of the transceiver with CMOS semiconductor technology, the digital signal processing circuit unit can be integrated to achieve the benefit of reducing costs. However, the output power of the circuit is not easy to increase, especially in the millimeter wave frequency band. The system must add an antenna array and use beamforming technology to increase the detectable distance. The high-efficiency millimeter wave power amplifier is an important circuit unit, and the goal is to achieve high output power and high efficiency. Under this plan, it is expected to promote international research cooperation in many ways. First, the research team of Professor Renato Negra of RWTH Aachen University has a significant foundation in millimeter-wave radar design, and plans to conduct related research cooperation in the future, mainly focusing on the front-end circuit design of millimeter-wave chip systems, and hope to publish papers together.
Secondly, we cooperated with Professor Donald Lie (Texas Tech University, USA) on power amplifier design to make up for the research deficiencies between Aachen University of Technology and our side.

During this year, Prof. Donald Lie. and Professor Guo Jiannan discussed how to conduct joint design research on power amplifiers used in millimeter-wave radar systems, and have sent graduate students to Texas Tech University to learn millimeter-wave power amplifier design, and will continue to expand the scope of cooperation in the future. The expected results can be applied to radar systems.
Prof. Donald Lie visited National Chiao Tung University on June 25 and July 1, 2019. On June 25, he met with the principal and Vice-President Chen Xinhong, and communicated with Professor Guo Jiannan’s team on millimeter wave power amplifier design and 5G communication technology, and discussed international cooperation, also visited the Department of Electronics and Dingxun High Frequency Laboratory.

3. Professor Horng Ruihwa of the Institute of Electronics has long-term cooperation with Professor KAUST Prof. He in energy projects. An article was published in Nature Communication this year:
