The National Academy of Inventors (NAI, National Academy of Inventors) recently announced the 2020 National Academy of Inventors (NAI Fellow) selection list. Kuan-Neng Chen’s high R&D energy in the field of 3D integrated circuits has been highly recognized and honored by the review committee that his research can improve the quality of human life, social and economic development and bring benefits and contributions. He will be awarded in June 2021. Kuan-Neng Chen is currently distinguished professor, dean of the International Affairs and associate dean of International College of Semiconductor Technology of National Chiao Tung University.
 
Kuan-Neng Chen is a distinguished professor of the Department of Electronics, and the dean of International Affairs of National Chiao Tung University and a Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, he joined the IBM Watson Research Center. He is currently the main promoter of National Chiao Tung University to promote 3D integrated circuits and advanced packaging technology. His long-term investment in the field of three-dimensional integrated circuit research covers three-dimensional integrated circuit, heterogeneous integration and advanced packaging technology. Since return to teach in Taiwan, Professor Chen has actively established a research team with innovative and practical capabilities; in addition to books and works, he has also published more than 300 journals and conference papers, including many IEEE high-quality journal papers, as well as IC components and IEDM, VLSI papers of the top international conferences in the field of manufacturing and ISSCC papers of the top international conferences in the field of IC design. His research results have industrial application and academic value. At present, he has listed 83 patents in various countries. At the same time, he has also served as chairperson, agenda chairperson and agenda committee member of several international conferences, and he acts as reviewers of more than 40 international journals.
 
Professor Kuan-Neng Chen’s excellent research results have been repeatedly affirmed over the years, and won the Ministry of Science and Technology Future Science and Technology Breakthrough Award (2019), IEEE EPS Outstanding Technical Achievement Award (2018), Ministry of Science and Technology Outstanding Research Award (2018), Micron Chair Professor (2018), Outstanding Engineering Professor Award of Chinese Institute of Engineers(2017), Outstanding Electrical Engineering Professor Award of the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering (2014). And won five National Chiao Tung University Industry-Academy Technology Exchange Outstanding Contribution Award and four IBM Invention Achievement Award. Currently, he is also a member of IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow and Fei Tao Fei Honor Society.
 
Professor Kuan-Neng Chen not only performed outstanding research, but also further promoted these researches to the industry, assisted domestic and foreign industries to upgrade, and is committed to researching and developing forward-looking technologies and implementing the results in the industry, continuing the cooperative relationship between technology research and development and licensing. Cooperation and technology transfer, the beneficiaries span multiple fields from foundry, packaging industry, electronic component industry, and equipment manufacturers, and make important contributions to the promotion of human economic development and civilization.
 
The Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors is one of the highest honors for academic inventors. This year, 175 academicians honored by National Academy of Inventors of the United States, are from 115 research universities, government agencies and non-profit research institutions, have up to 4,700 US patents, and have made significant contributions to enriching the quality of human life, promoting social well-being and economic development, and far-reaching impact.
